When and how to treat needlestick injuries

Needlestick injuries can occur easily and at the time appear relatively insignificant. It is vital to be aware of what kind of vaccine you are working with. In particular, mineral oil-based vaccines can result in tissue loss or worse if not identified and treated in a timely manner. Early debridement and irrigation of the injected area with decompression is likely to give the best outcome. Frequent review is necessary after the first procedure because repeat operations may be required. While medical staff are becoming more aware of the seriousness of this, there are still cases where needlestick injuries are mistaken for spider bites and not treated correctly. Below is a list of Australian surgeons experienced with these injuries and willing to be your advocate if required and links for further information.
